Spare a Thought for... Izale McLeod

Spare a Thought for... Izale McLeod

First things first, it`s worth mentioning right from the word go that Izale McLeod scored 54 goals in 116 league games with the Dons. League Two`s player of the year in 2007.

Izale was crucial is staving off relegation in 2005 (not many realise it was he who knocked the ball down for Gareth Edds to smash home against Tranmere) and his 21 goals under Martin Allen, part of a deadly partnership with Clive Platt, won him plenty of admirers. Indeed it was no surprise when Charlton paid a seven-figure sum for his services.

He`s gone on to be hated by many a Dons fan, and now, still struggling to get over a knee injury sustained during his Charlton spell, it seems he is falling out of favour in the Football League as a whole.

Having failed to impress in a loan spell at Posh last season, Izale has had unsuccessful trials with Brentford and now Southend, with Shrimpers boss Paul Sturrock telling the Southend echo: "They`re not good enough and not to the standard I want to bring to the football club."

Where does McLeod, so good so often in Dons colours, go now? He may well end up in non-league football or Scotland, and that may well do him the world of good.

For now though, McLeod looks set to slip off the football radar.
