The Column: A Summer of Success
Anything less than a win against Crawley would have been an anti-climax following the demolition of United on Tuesday, and as it happens, the Crawley Red Devils put up more of a fight than the ones from Manchester. For the first 20 minutes or so we were unplayable and working our way through the visitor`s defence was easy, but we seemed to lack ruthlessness in our finishing. Luckily Alli was there to score a fantastic goal. Our high-scoring start may have obscured this but there seems to be a lack of goals to be scored right throughout the squad. All the same this should be no problem with the strikers we`re lucky enough to possess. While quiet for large periods of the game Afobe`s goal demonstrates his improving finishing and general ability to bulldoze through a defence. His five goals to Griggs three may now ease him into the position of first choice striker and while I`d argue the Brentford loanee is the better player, I don`t care if all our goals come from David Martin as long we`re winning games. And as for McLeod, his penalty just summed him up as a player: lazy and show-boating without a paddle. I wish him all the best at Crawley but, definitely after Saturday, I doubt Robinson will have any regrets about letting him go.
I never thought I`d be celebrating having not signed anyone on deadline day, but retaining Dele Alli is probably our best 'signing` of the summer. No question of wanting more money (at his rate of progression, his value is hardly going to go down), but it`s just refreshing to see the management going with a firm stance and not backing down when a big club comes in - the eventual compensation following the Galloway sage an example of this. This is also seen in the fantastic acquisitions we`ve made in the summer, from Danny Green of a free to Kyle McFadzean on a good size fee, and while other signings could have been made to make it all perfect, this generally successful summer can only bode well for the future. And, if his tweets are true anyway, Alli wants to be here - he`ll lead us right the way to the Premier League I`m sure!
